Upworthy Video Poses an Easy Solution to Reduce Gun Violence

By Interrupt Violence

At the center of all the conversations focusing on the violence that plagues American urban centers is the debate over gun control. In an Upworthy video child proposes one easy solution to reduce gun violence. You can watch the video here: http://www.upworthy.com/a-little-kid-explains-a-solution-to-gun-violence-makes-sense-to-me-2

The video explains in a educational, candid, and simple animation that 40% of gun sales bypass gun control laws due to unregulated online purchases.. The video also advocates for everyone to sign the “Finish the Job Petition” which calls for Brady background checks on all gun sales. You can learn more about the petition here:

For those unfamiliar, the Brady law was enacted in 1993 by Congress to institutionalize federal background checks on firearm purchases in the United States. The Finish the Job website states that “since the Brady law was passed 20 years ago, background checks have stopped more than 2 million gun purchases by people like felons, domestic abusers and fugitives. But 40% of gun sales still go unchecked, leaving the door open for dangerous people to buy guns.”

A list form JustFacts.com about guns.
• Firearms are generally classified into three broad types: (1) handguns, (2) rifles, and (3) shotguns. Rifles and shotguns are both considered "long guns."
• Based on production data from firearm manufacturers, there are roughly 300 million firearms owned by civilians in the United States as of 2010. Of these, about 100 million are handguns
• Roughly 16,272 murders were committed in the United States during 2008. Of these, about 10,886 or 67% were committed with firearms
• At the current homicide rate, roughly one in every 240 Americans will be murdered.
• Since the outset of the Chicago handgun ban, the percentage of Chicago murders committed with handguns has averaged about 40% higher than it was before the law took effect.
• In 2005, 96% of the firearm murder victims in Chicago were killed with handguns.

No matter what your stance is on gun control, 40% seems like a very high percentage of unregulated guns entering the market. This debate over gun control is very heated and there are a lot of different organizations entrenched in their positions and taking hard stances. What do you think? Where do you stand?
