On September 24, 2009, sixteen-year old Derrion Albert was beaten to death by a group of teenage boys as he walked home from his school on Chicago's South Side. Because his death was caught on videotape, Albert's murder created national headlines and forced America to examine the complexities of youth violence.

The following educational module, The Death That Riled The Nation is designed to help students understand that the causes of violence are complex; violence is an epidemic, an infectious disease in a community at a particular time. The choices one makes can affect one's life and the lives of others. Individuals can become change agents in their communities through service and civic action.
